(NEW YORK, N.Y., June 27, 2007) – Now, there’s a new way to stay ahead of rapidly changing requirements in health care credentialing while avoiding potentially significant liability exposure. Just released, Health Care Credentialing: A Guide to Innovative Practices, covers key topics that are coming under increased scrutiny. This innovative publication joins a series of practical, insightful health care resources from Aspen Publishers, a part of Wolters Kluwer Law & Business (www.aspenpublishers.com).

Health Care Credentialing helps readers avoid potentially significant liability while staying completely current — and even ahead of the curve — with credentialing. Its loose-leaf format makes it easy to stay current on relevant regulations, statutes and accreditation standards. It also goes beyond standard policies and procedures to implement innovative methods for credentialing.

"Today, every health care and health-care-related organization must be completely clear about what’s required for credentialing," said Christina W. Giles, co-author of Health Care Credentialing. "More than before, institutions must be aware of the host of credentialing issues that are just emerging and that require innovative approaches."

Health Care Credentialing addresses the critical issues in this important arena. In addition to practical insights into demonstrated competencies, readers will find cutting-edge coverage such as credentialing for disaster management, innovative processes to upgrade clinical competencies outside the credentialing system, guidance on Board and IRB credentialing and groundbreaking perspectives on “Pay-For-Performance” and credentialing, behavioral problems, disruptive individuals and credentialing Independent Live Organ Donor Transplant Advocates and Live Organ Donor Advocate Teams.

Health Care Credentialing takes subscribers far beyond the standard review of credentialing concerns, delivering insights into innovative ways to collect, process and assess credentialing information. In addition, practice aids such as checklists, forms and sample policies and procedures save time and take the guesswork out of compliance while providing guidance through a wide variety of credentialing issues.

(RIVERWOODS, ILL., June 25, 2007) – Hospitals now have an end-to-end solution for understanding and managing Charge Description Masters (CDMs) on an ongoing basis. CCH, a leading supplier of health law information and a part of Wolters Kluwer Law & Business, has partnered with the ChargeMaster Institute (CMI) to create CCH® ChargeMaster Pro, the first complete answer to CDM management (chargemasterpro.cch.com).

"In today’s health care environment, reimbursement plays a vital role in the success of organizations, but maintaining an accurate and compliant CDM can be difficult, costly and time-consuming given the constantly changing environment," noted Paul Gibson, vice president, Wolters Kluwer Law & Business. "By partnering with ChargeMaster Institute, we are able to offer a complete end-to-end solution for managing a CDM: CCH ChargeMaster Pro. The training and CDM evaluation services provided by the CMI staff empowers institutions to fully understand and manage payment codes, reimbursement rules and changing rates by training their staff to make corrections and updates with confidence."

"By working with CCH, we can go beyond our normal training and evaluation services, by adding a powerful software tool and authoritative online database that puts institutions in control of updating their CDMs as regulations are issued and coding changes go into effect," said Leonard Womack, founder and CEO of ChargeMaster Institute. "As a totality, ChargeMaster Pro is unlike anything else available."

ChargeMaster Pro takes a three-fold approach that combines education in the form of lectures and hands-on training with a complete evaluation of existing codes conducted by CMI, reinforced by a powerful desktop CDM management software application designed to make the ongoing maintenance and compliance process more efficient.

Education

Conducted by CCH’s strategic partner, CMI, the ChargeMaster Pro educational program delivers hands-on ChargeMaster management practice and experience. Presented in a "lab" setting, this three-week program begins with instructional lessons and then advances to clinical sessions where students will work with their own facility’s CDM data.

Evaluation

Experts from CMI provide a thorough, line-by-line review of each institution’s CDM to ensure that it is using up-to-date information, covering all provided services and any possible compliance issues. They also examine charging and billing procedures to identify current practices that may lead to denied claims or inefficient charge capture. Upon completion of the review, CMI returns a fully reviewed CDM along with an Executive Report of their findings and recommendations, all supported by detailed documentation.

Software

CCH ChargeMaster Pro software operates as both a desktop application as well as an internet-based reference. It analyzes every line of code and suggests changes based on current, accurate data as well as top industry expertise. The user then decides, based on the hospital’s specific needs and circumstances, how to process each suggestion. ChargeMaster Pro provides detailed reports summarizing findings and recommendations, which can be implemented on a line-by-line item basis, departmental basis or globally.

ChargeMaster Pro works in conjunction with ChargeMaster Comply, CCH’s online knowledge base. ChargeMaster Comply provides all of the accurate data needed to maintain a clean CDM. It even sends weekly e-mails alerting users to all coding changes and when they will go into effect, ensuring they always work with the most recent regulatory information.

NEW LOOSE-LEAF FROM ASPEN PUBLISHERS DETAILS EFFECTIVE RESPONSES TO UNION ORGANIZING

(NEW YORK, N.Y., June 26, 2007) – Employer’s Guide to Union Organizing Campaigns from Aspen Publishers, a part of Wolters Kluwer Law & Business, is an essential manual for companies that need to respond to today’s union organizing environment, where every employer may be the subject of organizing efforts. Written by experts at the nationally recognized Jackson Lewis law firm, this loose-leaf volume stresses creating a work environment where employees are treated fairly but also explains how to counteract union tactics legally, using various methods of communication and current technology to present the employer’s side of the story (www.aspenpublishers.com).

"Contrary to what some may think, unions are extremely active in their organizing efforts today, targeting new sectors of the economy and utilizing new tactics," said Marty Payson, partner at Jackson Lewis. "Employers need to know how to lower their exposure through pro-active employment practices and how to counter the new kinds of challenges they face."

The Guide begins by looking at the overall state of labor-management relations today and highlights some of the continuing threats posed by organizing campaigns. It then provides employers with proven insights into becoming a pro-active employer and creating work environments where employees are treated fairly — establishing the sort of win-win conditions in which union organizing techniques have less effect. And if union organizing does begin, this professional resource explains precisely what employers can and should do — how to recognize a threat and how to communicate powerfully, using the Internet and other technology platforms that can help employers present their position.

The heart of Employer’s Guide to Union Organizing Campaigns is expert, step-by-step guidance to help employers and their legal counsel understand how today’s organizing environment can affect companies and how to respond without violating the law, alienating the workforce or creating ill will in the community.

The Guide addresses the latest organizing strategies and tactics: corporate campaigns, industry-wide campaigns, neutrality agreements, card-check recognition, framework agreements and more. Each chapter contains helpful features ready for immediate use such as case examples, strategy points, checklists, sample letters, documents, best practices and “Seek Counsel” headings alert the reader to developments that require the immediate attention of a labor attorney. Appendices include a corporate campaign case study in the health care industry and a counter-campaign play-by-play.

CCH Securities Law Analyst and Author Available for Comment

(RIVERWOODS, ILL., May 30, 2007) – CCH securities law principal analyst and leading author on securities law, Jim Hamilton, JD, LLM, has released a white paper on the long-awaited Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) issuances on internal controls over financial reporting under section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (www.cch.com/press/news/2007/CCHWhitePaper-InternalControls.pdf). CCH, a leading provider of securities law information, is part of Wolters Kluwer Law & Business.

Reporting on the adequacy of internal controls was a significant element of the corporate reforms embodied in the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation. Hamilton can explain and comment on the new regulations, including:

  • Why regulators felt a new approach was necessary;
  • The broad principles behind the guidance; and
  • What the new issuances mean in practice for auditors.

"The issuances emphasize a ‘principles-based’ and risk-based approach," said Hamilton. "This allows for greater discretion and judgment in assessing the effectiveness of the company’s internal control over financial reporting."

Hamilton has been tracking, analyzing and explaining securities law and regulation for nearly 30 years as an analyst for CCH. He has written and spoken extensively on federal securities law and has been cited as an authority by a federal court. His analysis of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the Sarbanes-Oxley Manual: A Handbook for the Act and SEC Rules, is considered a definitive explanation of the Act. Other works by Hamilton include the popular guidebook, Responsibilities of Corporate Officers and Directors under Federal Securities Law; the Guide to Internal Controls; and Informal Corporate Disclosure under Federal Securities Law.

In addition to his analysis for CCH, Hamilton’s blog Jim Hamilton’s World of Securities (www.jimhamiltonblog.blogspot.com) covers every level of securities regulation as it relates to public companies as well as serves as a forum to discuss Sarbanes-Oxley issues. Hamilton received a JD from Stetson University College of Law and an LLM from New York University School of Law.

Members of the press interested in speaking with Jim Hamilton should contact: Leslie Bonacum at 847-267-7153, mediahelp@cch.com; or Neil Allen at 847-267-2179, neil.allen@wolterskluwer.com.

(WARRENVILLE AND RIVERWOODS, ILL., May 16, 2007) – CourseAvenue, the leader in Learning Content Authoring Systems (LCAS) and learning integration services, is pleased to announce that they will begin distributing healthcare compliance courses written by experts at CCH. CCH, a part of Wolters Kluwer Law & Business, is a leading provider of research products and software solutions in key specialty areas for legal and business professionals. This distribution agreement has enabled CourseAvenue to build their new eComply for Healthcare Series of eLearning courseware, providing healthcare professionals across the country improved access to over 100 CCH healthcare compliance courses.

Healthcare organizations will also have the unique ability to customize CCH’s off-the-shelf compliance courseware, incorporating their organization’s look and feel, complete with logo, color schemes, and navigational elements, into the eLearning courseware.

"One of the biggest drawbacks for healthcare professionals to deploying online compliance training is the inflexible and expensive methods of customizing content with their own policies and procedures," said Joe Gorup, CEO of CourseAvenue. "CourseAvenue provides the option of purchasing training content with the ability to add customized content directly into the course."

Through CourseAvenue’s hybrid development approach, research and information providers such as CCH will be able to identify specific elements of off-the-shelf courses as consumer editable, allowing specific content to be tailored to an organization’s individual needs.  A typical example of this type of consumer editable content is a case study.  CourseAvenue’s eComply for Healthcare Series of compliance courseware provides generic case studies with the ability to replace it with another that fits an organization’s unique conditions or experiences .

According to Katherine Kerpan, acquisition editor for Wolters Kluwer Law & Business, "CCH is excited to partner with CourseAvenue, a company at the forefront of eLearning innovation. The agreement reinforces CCH’s leadership in providing authoritative solutions to healthcare professionals to help them keep current with compliance requirements with ease and confidence."

This important agreement reached between CCH and CourseAvenue ensures healthcare organizations that up-to-date compliance training is available to their employees in an online format that easily integrates directly into their learning management systems.  The courseware will also be available through national healthcare training distributors of eLearning courseware.  Contact CourseAvenue at www.courseavenue.com for more information.

(RIVERWOODS, ILL., May 3, 2007) – Aspen Publishers has announced the publication of Beyond the Big Firm: Profiles of Lawyers Who Want Something More, a distinctive book exploring the many possibilities open to law school graduates interested in alternative career choices. Aspen Publishers, part of the Wolters Kluwer Law & Business group, is a leading information provider for legal and business professionals and law students (www.aspenpublishers.com).

"Beyond the Big Firm challenges traditional assumptions about the range of possibilities available to law school graduates," said Jennifer Armstrong, marketing director for Aspen Publishers’ legal education group. "It serves as an invaluable resource, exposing readers to a variety of options while providing insight on how to achieve career goals."

Informative Content, Personal Experiences

Beyond the Big Firm fills a major information void for those interested in a career outside the typical large, corporate law firm. This informative title features more than 30 compelling profiles of lawyers whose choices have led them to follow nontraditional careers in law, in a wide range of subject areas, practice setting and work types. Lawyers profiled have been out of law school for 10-15 years, represent 18 law schools and work in 15 states.

This invaluable resource allows law school students, recent graduates or anyone considering law school to:

  • Learn from the experiences of lawyers working in civil rights, civil liberties, immigration, employment, environmental, personal injury and human rights law;
  • Learn about working in civil and criminal litigation from prosecutors and defense counsel; and
  • Explore the opportunities for advocacy and other work in government, for non-profit organizations as well as small private law firms.

In addition, Beyond the Big Firm includes a special resource chapter to help readers determine and follow their career choice; three mini-profiles of lawyers who are not practicing law but whose work relies heavily on their legal training; and short essays by current and former Stanford Law School deans, Professor Larry Kramer and Professor Kathleen Sullivan.

About the Editors

Regarded as one of the most respected lawyers to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court, Alan B. Morrison has worked for over 30 years in the public interest engaging in a wide range of law reform litigation and has brought cases to trial in areas affecting the separation of powers, the legal profession and the control of federal regulatory agencies, among others. He is a member and past president of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers and an elected member of the American Law Institute. Morrison joined the Stanford Law School faculty in 2004. Prior to this, Professor Morrison was the director of Public Citizen Litigation Group, the Washington, D.C.-based consumer rights advocacy group he co-founded with Ralph Nader in 1972, and an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. He has taught at New York University Law School, Harvard Law School and the University of Hawaii.

Diane T. Chin is a leading public interest lawyer and associate director for the Thelton E. Henderson Center for Social Justice at the University of California, Berkeley’s School of Law. Prior to this, Chin served as director of Stanford’s Center for Public Service and Public Interest Law since 2003. At Stanford, Chin developed a successful and highly regarded public service program that integrates the practical aspects of working with students with the intellectual and academic pursuits involved in public interest education. The program, which serves as a model for other law schools, brings under one roof such disparate elements of social justice training as career services, speaker series and specialized curriculum.

Previously, Chin served as executive director of Chinese for Affirmative Action for five years, and as senior trial attorney for the San Francisco Police Commission Office of Citizen Complaints between 1996 and 1998. As director of the Racial Violence Project and a staff attorney for the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 1990s, Chin represented individual victims of hate violence and worked with police departments to develop the tools and skills necessary for effective investigation of hate crimes.

(RIVERWOODS, ILL., May 1, 2007) – Environmental compliance professionals and environmental corporate counsel responsible for complying with environmental laws and regulations can now leverage the insight and analysis of seasoned engineers and environmental professionals with the new Environmental Compliance Portfolio, an online resource from Wolters Kluwer Law & Business (http://hr.cch.com/environmental). Wolters Kluwer Law & Business (WK L&B) is a leading provider of specialized business compliance information and software, whose leading brands include Aspen Publishers and CCH.

The Environmental Compliance Portfolio consists of three core areas, Air Quality Compliance; Hazardous Waste and Hazardous Substances; and Wastewater and Water Quality Compliance, to help professionals understand environmental compliance issues and stay current with regulatory changes.

The Portfolio draws on the leading resources of CCH and the prestigious Aspen Publishers journals entitled Air Pollution Consultant and Hazardous Waste Consultant, trusted publications that have been serving environmental professionals for 25 years.

"The new Environmental Compliance Portfolio expands our presence in the environmental market," said Paul Gibson, WK L&B Business Compliance Group Vice President. "Our portfolio is uniquely centered around in-depth analyses from environmental professionals who are experts in interpreting the laws and regulations. The richness of our linkage capabilities and multiple research path options makes this the ideal resource for facilities managers and corporate counsel professionals."

Linking Together Multiple Sources

The Environmental Compliance Portfolio helps users understand and respond to environmental compliance issues by linking together information from multiple sources. Regulatory analysis articles, the heart of the Portfolio, are issued as EPA regulatory actions appear in the Federal Register, and are linked directly to the full text of the Federal Register actions. Court case descriptions are also linked to the full text of the cases and regulations. Finally, thousands of U.S. EPA guidance documents are linked to the full text of regulations. The Portfolio’s word search capabilities and the keyword, industry and citation indexes tie all of these three components together to provide a powerful research resource tool that is continually updated.

Primary Sources

The Environmental Compliance Portfolio’s primary sources include federal statutes and regulations and full text of the legal cases reviewed, along with analytical content and agency guidance documents. The federal environmental regulations are from Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Statutes in the Portfolio include:

  • Clean Air Act;
  • Clean Water Act (Federal Water Pollution Control Act);
  • Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act;
  • Endangered Species Act;
  • Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act;
  • Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act;
  • National Environmental Policy Act;
  • Oil Pollution Act of 1990;
  • Pollution Prevention Act;
  • Resource Conservation and Recovery Act;
  • Safe Drinking Water Act; and
  • Toxic Substances Control Act.

In the coming weeks, coverage will be expanded to include state-specific analysis, statutes, regulations and guidance documents for states with the largest number of industrial facilities, as identified by the EPA.

Portfolio Components

The Environmental Compliance Portfolio focuses on three distinct areas:Air Quality Compliance; Hazardous Waste and Hazardous Substances; and Wastewater and Water Quality Compliance.

Air Quality Compliance keeps users current with the constantly changing Clean Air Act (CAA) regulations as they affect stationary sources, with practical advice and expert analysis from air quality experts. Air Quality Compliance covers regulatory actions as they occur, along with explanations of court cases affecting CAA regulations. It dissects the underlying rationale behind each regulation covered so users can quickly master the nuances of all corresponding compliance requirements for their facilities.

Hazardous Waste and Hazardous Substances delivers fast online access to compliance solutions for hazardous waste management problems. It offers continually updated analysis of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA); Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA); Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA); and Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) regulations to help users better understand regulatory requirements.

Hazardous Waste and Hazardous Substances keeps users up to date on all of the latest developments related to hazardous waste assessment, treatment, storage and disposal, as well as waste minimization technologies. It delivers updated coverage of federal and state legal cases and provides links to the full text of EPA guidance documents, regulations and court cases.

Wastewater and Water Quality Compliance provides thorough, expert analysis of Clean Water Act (CWA) and Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) issues as regulated by the EPA. It is a powerful research tool that offers regulatory analysis and agency guidance documents all linked back to source material, including Federal Register documents and related regulations.

Users may subscribe to any or all three distinct areas. With a subscription to any part of the Portfolio, users also enjoy complimentary access to the CCH Environmental Tracker, a daily news update and CCH Net News, a biweekly news summary. Also available online is Business and the Environment, a monthly newsletter that focuses on sustainable development and climate change.
